Job Description
MJM Energy Services (See https://www.mjmenergy.ca) located at 84 Thornhill Drive (Unit 2) Dartmouth, NS, B3B 1S3. has a need for a full time and permanent corporate controller
Duties
• Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements, management reports, and other financial information for MJM Energy Limited and related group companies.
• Maintain and balance group accounts, inter-company transactions, reconciliations, and consolidated financial records using computerized accounting systems.
• Manage balance sheet and profit and loss accounts and support month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, pre-paids, payroll entries, work-in-progress, job costing adjustments, HST, and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts and provide recommendations on cash management, including weekly cash planning, payroll funding, credit card funding, supplier payments, CRA obligations, and expected customer receipts.
• Develop and maintain cost findings, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, project margin analysis, and related internal control procedures.
• Analyze financial records and provide operations with financial visibility on labour, materials, subcontractors, purchasing controls, billing status, and overall job performance.
• Support invoicing and revenue recognition processes, including progress billing, completed job invoicing, customer account follow-up, and timely recognition of revenue.
• Examine accounting records and review accounts payable processes, supplier payment cycles, purchase documentation, credit card controls, and approval workflows.
• Analyze financial documents and reports and provide management with practical financial and business advice on sales trends, gross margins, net profit, project profitability, aged receivables, aged payables, WIP exposure, and operational KPIs.
• Oversee payroll administration and review related accounting entries, including vacation pay, statutory holiday pay, and piecework or job-based compensation structures where applicable.
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, procedures, internal controls, HST requirements, payroll remittances, CRA deadlines, and other statutory filing obligations.
• Provide financial and business advice to ownership and management by identifying cash flow risks, cost control concerns, process gaps, and operational inefficiencies.
• Plan, establish, administer, and improve accounting systems, financial policies, reporting templates, internal controls, and workflow procedures.
• Support the budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning process by preparing financial information for departments and group companies, gathering operational inputs, and assisting management with analysis and decision-making.
• Prepare management accounting reports, including budget-to-actual comparisons, variance analysis, job profitability reports, work-in-progress summaries, cost tracking, margin analysis, and operational KPI reporting.
• Work with management to collect departmental assumptions, update forecasts, perform variance analysis, monitor performance against budget, and highlight financial trends, risks, or areas requiring attention.
• Assist in the planning and execution of financial statement audits and liaise with external accountants, auditors, banks, government agencies, lenders, and other professional advisors as required.
• Recommend and implement improvements to accounting systems and management practices, including accounting software, reporting tools and workflow systems, job management systems, and process automation.
• Supervise, train, and provide guidance to finance and administration staff, including arranging or coordinating training where required.
• Maintain accurate, complete, balanced, and confidential financial records and accounts.
Experience Required /Skills Required
• Several progressive accounting, management accounting, controllership, or senior finance experience.
• Experience managing financial reporting for multiple entities or group companies.
• Strong experience with work-in-progress accounting, job costing, project accounting, or construction/service-based accounting.
• Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting practices, payroll accounting, HST, CRA remittances, internal controls, and financial reporting.
• Advanced Excel skills and strong ability to work with accounting systems, reporting tools, and operational data.
• Strong understanding of cash flow forecasting, supplier payment planning, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and working capital management.
• Ability to interpret financial information and communicate clearly with non-financial managers.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and accountability.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in accounting
Professional designation
CPA or
Chartered Global Management Accountant or
Associate Charted Management Accountant
