Colour and surface pattern are the features most often used to judge seed maturity. A typical answer to what do sativa seeds look like describes a hard shell in shades of brown or grey, marked with darker mottled stripes sometimes called tiger striping. These markings belong to a thin outer layer that can rub off during handling, leaving a plain surface underneath. A missing pattern therefore says little about quality.
