Job Description
Daily Duties
- Supervise play and care for child, while continuously ensuring safety and well-being
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment in the home
- Tend to the emotional well-being of the child and support the social development
- Provide age-appropriate educational training and play
- Provide behavioural guidance: discipline and educate the child to ensure age-appropriate proper behaviour
- Take child to outings, e.g. to a playground or park, weather and health permitting
- Prepare the child’s meals, snacks and drinks
- Feed the child or ensure the child is able to eat independently
- Ensure reasonable level of hygiene
- Change diapers, wash hands and face as necessary
- Change drooling bibs, food bibs and clothes as necessary
- Ensure child is well rested and adhere to age-appropriate nap/quiet time
- Clean up kitchen and dining area after food preparation and feeding, including putting dishes in the dishwasher, leftovers in the refrigerator and garbage in the garbage cans
- Inform the parents of any missing items for the child, e.g. food, diapers, wipes, cremes
- Inform parents of observations regarding child, e.g. regarding health, developmental stage, and provide advice based on observations
- Tidy up play area at the end of workday
- Conduct a quick hand-over at the end of the workday, and provide an overview of the day to parents, e.g. activities, child’s preferences, child’s mood, sleep
Additional Duties (time permitting)
- Plan developmentally appropriate activities, discuss any related expenses with parents for approval, and gather necessary items for activities such as games, crafts, reading
- Take child to outings or appointments outside the house: e.g. music class, library or classes at library, swimming and other sports, programs such as Strong Start or Thrive, play dates
- Plan healthy meals, snacks and drinks as much as possible and ideally include meals that the parents will prepare for the child, e.g. in the mornings, evenings or on the weekends
- Run basic errands, e.g. go grocery shopping for child’s missing food or hygiene items, missing pantry items for family
- Brush child’s teeth, bathe and dress child, cut/file finger and toenails
- Monitor health and well-being, and administer medication in case of sickness as instructed by parents
- Instruct child in personal hygiene and potty training (if appropriate)
- Accompany the family and care for child during appointments/outings, e.g. a doctor’s visit or a day trip
- Perform light housekeeping duties, e.g. laundry, light cleaning, help with cooking, changing sheets in child’s bed
